  1. The beautiful face-on galaxy, M101 was 
  2. discovered in 1781. It is estimated to 
  3. have a mass equal to about 16 
  4. billion of our suns or only 10% of the 
  5. Milky Way. This makes it one of the 
  6. lowest density galaxies known. M101 is 
  7. also believed to be about 90,000 light 
  8. years in diameter. A total of 3 
  9. supernovae have been observed in M101, in
  10. the years 1903, 1951 and 1970.
